Glassmaker tradition

Research shows that the glassmaker tradition of the Eisch family dates back to Mathias Alesch, who was born in the Bohemian Forest in 1689, and who is mentioned there on the list of employees of a small glassworks.

The founder

As from the year 1914, Valentin Eisch, the founder of the Eisch glass factory, worked as a master engraver at the crystal glass factory of Counsellor of Commerce Isidor Gistl. In 1946 he started his own refining company together with his wife Therese, in order to build up a secure existence for his six children.

Formation of competition

Soon the existing glass factories in the Bavarian Forest feared the formation of competition, which they wanted to prevent by blocking raw glass deliveries to the Eisch factory. The Eisch family therefore was forced to establish a glass production of its own.

The youngest and smallest glass factory in Bavaria

In the youngest and smallest glass factory in Bavaria at that time, the first glass was melted in December 1952. Despite immense initial difficulties, the factory could already be extended with a 12 pot furnace already in 1956.

Close cooperation of all the members of the family and all the employees gave rise to a continuous upward development.

Erwin Eisch

Erwin Eisch was the pioneer and spiritual father of the studio glass movement in Europe. For the glass factory, he provides important impulses and is a "person with a different mind" still today.

Poetry in glass

Based on Erwin Eisch's freely blown glass, the "Poetry in glass" series of unique items was created in 1977: Collector's items in flowing shapes, that were designed into many-coloured objects with the most varied furnace and cold glass techniques.

Chancellor visit

In 1997 the German chancellor of that time, Helmut Kohl, visited the Eisch glass factory. To him, Erwin Eisch presented the "Helmut Kohl" glass portrait head.

The third generation

Today, it is the third family generation that controls the Eisch glass factory. Since January 1993, the responsibility for the Eisch glass factory has rested with the juniors Julia Eichinger-Eisch and Eberhard Eisch.

The book: "Die Eisch-Hütte"

The family history of the Eisch glass factory is described in great detail and most impressively in the book "Die Eisch-Hütte" by Dr. Katahrina Eisch. For more detailied information on this book, please contact the Eisch glass factory at tel. 09926/1890.

Living conditions

The living conditions of glassmakers in the Bavarian Forest between 1760 and 1850, using the glassmaker family of Michael Eisch as an example, are vividly described in the book "Klingenbrunn-Oberkreuzberg" by Alfons Eisch. For purchasing this book, please contact gisela_eisch@web.de
